Our Tiny House… the backstory

September 3, 2023 by Clara Leave a Comment

It all started with a dream, an ultimatum, and two very broke world travelers.

You see, I met my husband Tim when I went to Florida to do a Discipleship Training School with YWAM in 2017. We started dating, he moved home to the PNW in early 2018, after being in missions for 10 years. I’ll share more details of our love story another time, but eventually I moved up to the PNW also, we got married in 2019, and we needed a place to live.

When Tim first moved home, he was living with his parents. So when we were planning to get married, I told him I was not willing to live in his parents basement. No judgment to anyone who has been in this situation, but it was important to me for us to start our marriage in our own space. I was expecting to rent an apartment or something, but Tim had a dream! He wanted to build our home.

Enter the tiny house. The same day Tim bought the engagement ring, he also bought the trailer frame for the tiny house. At least he bought the ring first!

He began building in fall of 2018, and we moved in after being married for a month in summer of 2019.

I had never pictured myself living in a tiny house, but when Tim pitched the idea to me, it made sense for us. We were both pretty broke when we got married, so building the tiny house allowed us to add on at our own pace and own the home we live in. Unlike some people who choose tiny living, we aren’t super minimalistic people by nature. But after the all the traveling we had done, we had learned how to live with only the essentials. It also helped that we were able to park the tiny house on family land, and have extra storage space there.

We have lived in the tiny house for 4 years now! It has been challenging, and a work in progress even to this day. While it won’t be our forever home, living in a tiny house has been a unique and rewarding experience that has shaped our family. It has taught us to be resilient, creative, and to live with less…. Which is really not a bad thing!

Now that we have added to our family and have a one year old running around, we are starting to see the end of our time in the tiny house getting closer. Many, many hours have gone into this tiny house. Lots of sweat and tears and frustration. But we have a roof over our heads. It’s ours, we own it, and we are debt free. It’s a really beautiful place to be.
